NewIslands Interview
February 1, 2010
We caught up with upcoming band NewIslands to find out what’s what:
Hello. Please describe yourselves in 10 words
We couldn’t possibly describe ourselves in ten words could we?
What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
We are influenced by loads of bands, mainly British. Collectively we love The Doors, Echo and The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, Animal Collective, David Bowie… this could give you an idea of where we’re coming from. We like to inspire ourselves all the time with what we’re creating, its a huge melting pot of ideas and music, it keeps things exciting.
What song written by another artist do you wish you had written? Do you play any covers live?
We don’t play covers live yet, we may do one day. Hey Jude by The Beatles, or Lets Dance by Bowie, but there are loads. We respect our deserving predecessors.
What would you say we have to look forward to musically in 2010?
We set out to make music that the listener can really lose themselves in, something quite other worldly sounding. In 2010 we have our first single coming out, and will continue releasing stuff throughout the year.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
Myself and Luke write the songs. We kind of bounce ideas off each other and tend to end up with rather dreamy lyrics. We like to paint a picture, or tell a story, but not in the standard way. For example, we have a song called Girl From Venus which describes the perfect girl. Its got an eastern feel to it. A lot of our songs deal in escapism and dreaminess, which I’m sure we will develop on over time. Ideas will come at the strangest times, and you just go with it! We write music together to escape, to dream, its what keeps us going, know what I mean?
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
Well I think we are finding our sound more and more with each song we write. I’d say its very early days for us, but the future is wide open.
What would you guys liked to have achieved by this time next year?
Mmm, well we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but we do have lofty ambitions! We’ll keep them to ourselves for now.

They are a great band, I listen to them and go to see them as often as I can, I think they are brilliant!
