Cargo presents a series of tributes to 4 music heroes. So come down to our great big yard and enjoy some of the best music ever made. BBQ and cocktail specials included.
For our second tribute we invited composer David Graham to select an artist and pay him hommage. David Graham is a founder member of avant-pop duo Cnut and orchestral doombience outfit Regolith. He writes everything and anything from scores to sound scultpure and pop songs.
He chose Frank Zappa. This is why:
"Frank Zappa is a unique artist, and one who is difficult to label. His music covered many styles, from jagged anti-pop in the sixties to orchestral concerts in the nineties - but to me he signifies a couple of other things. He made his music his business, and any musician who is struggling to earn money could learn from investigating his business model. From a musical point of view, his genius was in organising people, and getting the best from them...which resulted in countless extraordinary performances. His music has the peculiar property of coming back to haunt you - albums that you hated on first listen, somehow become alltime favourites years later. He was also uniquely honest and outspoken, often taking the big players in the music industry to task for ripping artists off - he would also disclose his sales and earnings. But most of all, he never stopped, or rested or ran out of inspiration. His enthusiam and love for music shines through in his work, even when his anger and hatred of ignorance and prejudice sometimes threatens to darken the mood."
