Lone Lady's debut album is scheduled for release on Warp in Feb 2010. Her myspace does not reveal much, neither does Warp's previews, and we can't help but be terribly curious about this Mancunian lady's album and live act. From what we can tell, Lone Lady (one Julie Campbell) is a talented song-smith and guitarist, blessed with an electrifying voice, who creates music with a very personal and intimate touch that at the same time remains distanced and statuesque and sometimes almost entrancing. If you're as curious as us, this is your chance to find out more.
Another new comers that already has drawn favorable attention, Samuel and the Dragon have just one single behind them (the haunting diamonds on a boat, voted Xfm record of the week), but they already got quite a few people interested. This duo are singer Samuel Chase, who yields an soulful, fragile but powerful voice, and James Cameron, who creates a backdrop of dubstep tinged broken beats and synths that hints towards Portishead's hazy darkness and Junior Boy's digital playfulness.
We just had to go into a trite labeling exercise at this point – Clock Opera sounds like a polygamist marriage between The Postal Service, M83, Arcade Fire and a west-end musical – in a good way. Well, as usual, that didn't really work - there is more to Clock Opera than that. Clock Opera is Guy Connelly, and his strategy is layering a matriculate shoegazey cut n' paste electronic soundtrack for his quasi-operatic singing (hence title?) and the occasional electro-ish beat. The result is as sing-a-long as it is atmosphere.
All of this wonderfulness will be coupled with the skill of Adventures in the Beetroot Field resident DJ's for a night that's part musical discovery, part good old hip swaying.
