Cargo and Adventures in the Beetroot Field present Free Fridays!
Maps is James Chapman's home-studio project. Drawing heavily from the sounds of Spiritualized, Maps delivers lush electronic soundscapes imbibed with melodic sensibility. Joined on stage by his side-kick August, his music is perfect for performing live, and this is a rare opportunity to witness it first hand. His new single "I Dream Of Crystal" is out September 14th, and includes remixes by Steve Lawler and Solo.
Poni Hoax is a five man army of «jeunes gens modernes», bookworm musicians and extremely talented composers signed to ace Parisian imprint Tigersushi. Their lead vocalist, Nicolas Ker tackles an ambitious and unique style that walks the thin line between a decadent Morrissey or an elegiac Jim Morrisson.
Continuing Cargo's love affair with DFA records, the peak time disco shennanigans come this time courtesy of Ben Rymer, one half of the brilliant Gucci Soundsystem out of NYC. A man who the Rapture described as "lookin like a poor man's Arthur Baker..." in the hilarious tongue in cheek diss "No Sex for Ben Rymer" Ben is here to prove that he can get sex whenever he wants... with our sound system. Dancefloor dirtyness yes please officer.
If you listen to Hook &the Twin's music you'll be forgiven for thinking there are 6 or 7 guys on stage. In fact there is just two of them making a right racket by sampling and looping themselves whilst they create music that is both dense and instantly likeable. Sounding like what Foals would have if they'd grown up in 1970's Germany, Hook & The Twin have released a track on the recent Brand Neu! compilation and tonight will play cargo for the first time. We can't wait.
Samuel & The Dragon are the dark horse in the line-up. Despite being a very young band, Samuel & The Dragon have already created a buzz around them and their space age angelic pop dreams. Citing Bjork, The Cinematic Orchestra, Tom Waites, Fennesz and Camille as influences, you know you are going to get something a little bit of strange and a lot of beautiful. And the boys can deliver. One to watch.
Rounding up things nicely are visceral electro producers Run Hide Survive from Leeds, where they run the Pony Club and make devastating dancefloor bombs. Put your hands up in the air and shake them like a mother&*^%r.
