Born and raised in northern North Dakota, TOM BROSSEAU's dense musical, cultural, and personal histories have helped him create music of great beauty, stillness, intimacy and celebration.
He's toured with PJ Harvey and John Parish, writes songs referencing Vincent Price, appeared in the documentary film Largo (with Flight of the Conchords & more), records and performs with classical violinist Hilary Hahn, interviewed Miranda July, and made a fan of Natalie Portman who chose his song "Plaid Lined Jacket" for a compilation she curated.
Tom Brosseau's third full-length for FatCat, Posthumous Success, marks a huge stylistic shift away from the spare, acoustic arrangements of his previous releases, notably 2007‘s Cavalier, produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels). During spring, summer and fall of 2008, Brosseau worked with two producers and a handful of guest musicians to flesh and clothe his songs' sturdy skeletons, lending them breath, presence, and limb- stretching immediacy.
The eerie and pastoral sound of BIRDENGINE's music is a product of Mr Lawry Joseph Tilbury's upbringing in rural Dorset. Recording only on a 4-track tape recorder and using a whole range of dictaphones, home-made tape loops and music boxes, he harbours a deep loathing for computers and digital equipment opting instead for the humble hiss of a tape cassette.
Based in Brighton and somewhat of a recluse, Birdengine's live shows are rare and vary greatly, from purely electronic sets using toy keyboards with dying batteries and a tape recorder to sets with just nylon guitar, vocals and a cello. His body of work ranges from soft and slow waltzes to thick electronic dirges all retaining that distinctive weird, sad and isolated Birdengine sound.
Like a cryptic, symbolic dream, the music of JOKER'S DAUGHTER feeds on a range of conscious and unconscious influences, from classical violin training to Arthurian legend to a certain fascination with food. The result is haunting, infectious and playful, a rich harvest from a broad psychic landscape.
In 2003, she began sending her home recordings to artist/producer Danger Mouse, a correspondence that continued as his career grew. The two artists discovered a natural affinity, and launched a collaboration, which they dubbed Joker's Daughter after one of Helena's many-shifting personae.
