The Hackney Empire
Finding himself neighbours with one Sierra Leon's foremost palm wine guitarists - Folo Graff - A.J. Holmes began a journey of learning in West African guitar styles. As a performer Holmes first dabbled in live shows with just acoustic guitar and digital technology to arrive at something delightfully unique which he entitled the New Electric Hi-Life. Now Holmes performs with an 8 piece group - The Hackney Empire - which continue to help mould his unique vision melding palm wine and highlife with Euro pop creating a feet stomping tropical explosion.
Monkfish
Describing themselves as an African tropical guitar pop 8 piece Monfish produce high energy assaults of dense percussion and lush tropical pop melody from guitars, horns and harmony. Formed in 2006 from a shared love of African and Caribbean pop music, Monkfish write tunes influenced by anything from driving Congolese rumba to Cuban son - with an urban South London twist. The group is dedicated to using African popular musical canons to create modern musical expression that is at home in 21st Century London.
