This May's Soundcrash clubnight is a veritable hotch-potch of fine musical styles, drawing on all corners of our little island for talent and finishing it all off with the hugely welcome return of some American maestros....
Widely regarded as cutting edge innovators to a broad spectrum of listeners including b-boy purists, experimental electronic heads and indie rockers, Antipop Consortium's return is anticipated to fill a creative void in not only hip hop, but music as a whole. They have been praised for their stream-of consciousness lyrics, their ability to give seemingly unrelated word clusters hidden meaning, and their sonic backdrops that provide the perfect canvas for their lyrical paintings.
Since the album Arrhythmia (2002) was released to critical acclaim on Warp Records, and found them on tour with DJ Shadow and Radiohead among others, they found it necessary to take a break and work on their individual projects. But have no fear, because APC have reconvened in full force and are currently working on material for their forthcoming album Fluorescent Black, as well as touring their formidable live show which we are thrilled to have in Cargo's arches.
MR THING started his high profile career as 'the best one from the Scratch Perverts'! Not a bad start you'd think, however since his split with them he has gone on to become about the most respected hip hop DJ in the UK, working with BBE records, Yungun, Vadim, Roots Manuva and just about everyone else! Yes he still posesses the sublime turntable trickery that the 'Pervs were all about but now, as a major lynchpin of the UK hip hop scene his sets are just as much about dropping the greatest block party anthems to excite trainspotters and the mainstream alike! He played at Soundcrash in January and bwoy was that party jumping!
Memory9 bridges the gap between the zen of electronic performance and the thrust of live playing thanks to unique control surfaces and homemade software, injecting the floor with his kaleidoscopic vision of music: expect to hear a unique mashup from beginning to end, expect it to surprise you with shards from myriad corners of the musical spectrum. That, and loads of bass.
CARPETFACE & AUDIBLE have toured extensively, playing over 600 live sets in the last 5 years alone, supporting a diverse range of major acts including UGLY DUCKLING, THE PHARCYDE and DJ FORMAT, knocking audiences sideways with their cross-genre appeal and winning over an international audience in the process. Their infectiously catchy hooks and call-and-answer choruses laced with live mc'ing, human beatboxing, percussion and turntablism make for maximum crowd involvement.
Our old faourites Reptiles draw a straight line from the roots of hip hop to the captain's star log. They have the emotional impact like back in the day, yet leave you feeling you've just made one small head nod for man. Part of Vadim's Oneself collective, they are the perfect addition to this brazen night of pure Soundcrash dancefloor shaking.
Folk-tronica purveyors of prettyness Black Diamond Bay have recently released their ep 'Ten Thousand Hours' on Sic Outfit records, so-named after a study at an American University found that this is the amount of practice required to reach a level of genius... judge for yourselves as all of them take to the hallowed stage in Cargo's 3rd arch for a rare London outing from these Northern souls.
