With a familiar tale of childhood discovery and pocket money spent on nothing but 7's Chris Manak, aka Peanut Butter Wolf, grew up into one of the hardest working, sharp-eared and most affable charactures in hip-hop, and God bless him he chanelled his obsession into Stones Throw Records, purveyors of some of the finest left-field rap music around. Approaching the 1210's more like Grand Master Flash than Krush, PBW usually rocks a party better than most, playing to the crowd, mc-ing, a dash of turn-table-trickery and beats dropping like a tempest in a tea cup. Tonight, however, we've got something a bit more special lined-up... The deftest of DJ's has lined up a live AV set, mixing and scratching with audio and video a la Hexstatic and Yoda, though undoubtedly with a Stones Throw slant! That is exciting. If you are yet to witness one his regular sets then expect to dance your way through an hour or so of pure, left-field, audio-visual education!

Continuing the left-leaning attitude to beat-smithery in the ST camp is the explicitly named James Pants. Having dabbled with drums, mics, and various DJ forrays (he learned to scratch on dodgy decks with Steppenwolf records?!) Mr Pants now has a unique live band, mixing soul, funk, hip-hop, electro and just about anything else you can think of into an almost irritatingly danceable sound that has my seat creaking as I write this!

Avid 80's boogie-funk collector, promoter and DJ Dam-FunK lends a retro feel to the affair, digging out beats that any modern-day producer would be proud of and mixing them together in a G-funk-tastic, smoked-out blissful journey through the hidden side of the neon decade. Break out the Cristal, spark the blunts (outside, of course!), lay back and groove to the smoothness of the boogie.

If you've heard him sing, but haven't seen any pictures of him, then be prepared for a shock when Mayer Hawthorne takes the stage. This is one little white guy with soul, ounces of the stuff, oozing out from every pore all over his own productions, which sound as though they come straight outta '68, apart for the broken-beat element. Its hard to explain; 'future-retro' perhaps, or 'Nostalgique' maybe. Either way, its soul Jim, but not as we know it!
