Cargo is proud to host the sizzling summer sounds from the South Pacific in the grande-finale of New Zealand Music Month. We have arranged for sunshine all day and a Kiwi flavoured BBQ in the yard and a selection of bands from New Zealand to soothe the soul after a hectic bank holiday weekend.
May bank holiday marks the end of the music month, a long running New Zealand government initiative to encourage local music. The festival is dedicated to celebrating homegrown talent and Spacific are sponsored by the New Zealand music commission to run events in the UK, showcasing both locally based expat talent as well as a few bands who are already in the country.
Outdoor entertainment comes from The Bassbin Kid and his wheelie bin soundsystem, while indoors Christchurch is providing us with two up and coming talents, the folksy Ragamuffin Children and the seemingly unclassifiable O’Lovelys.
Ragamuffin Children produce their unique sound through vocals, fiddle, piano, clarinet, glockenspiel and rap. The trio’s music “sounds like something written in a graveyard whilst holding a tea-party and singing nursery rhymes”. They sing about serious and sensible subjects such as war and poverty but also about whimsical things such as aliens and hot air balloon adventures. Their influences include people, puppets, social issues, imaginary friends, Portishead, Bjork, Fiona Apple and Feist.
Once described as “the perfect mix of style and substance, tragedy and comedy, rock and some very dynamic roll" the O'Lovelys are a nice three piece Indie Pop band, currently situated somewhere in Europe made up of vocals synth and drums. Their music swings between sweet pop, synth based dance tunes to stuttering rhythmic jaunts, and introverted soundscapes.
